Portugal beat the Odds and win the UEFA Euro 2016

It didn’t seem like Portugal could possible win the UEFA Euro 2016.After coming third in the group stages and the devastating sight of seeing their star player and captain – Cristiano Ronaldo gets severally injured by the French national player – Dimitri Payet; it was starting to seem like Portugal chances of winning the game was very unlikely.

Even Ronaldo’s mother – Dolores Aveiro took to twitter to describe her outrage on what’s happened to her son.  Roughly translated she wrote – “I cannot see it this way my son. The game is to kick the ball and not hurt the opponent.”

The entire 90 minutes of the game were left without anyone from either teams, being able to score a goal and it was proving quite difficult because as the match went on both teams seemed to be working harder to get a goal in for their country. Both teams had lots to motivate them.             France where the host country and so it would be great if they could win the Cup in their homeland. But also Portugal had motivation as they were considered to be the underdogs earlier in the competition and had a history of struggles as they previously lost the UEFA Euro final to Greece, on Portuguese soil in 2004.

Since the designated time of the game was left with no one scoring, the match had to go over time and there were given another 30 minutes, where of course if no one does score, they would have to move to penalties. During that time Ronald came back onto the pitch with his friend/personal manger Ricky Regufe (who is also Portugal’s national team marketing manager ), and went to each of the players and spoke to them, seemed like he was giving them words of encouragement, as any good captain should.

In the first half of the added time there was still know goal, but Portugal proved stronger and have brought in one of their replacement players – Eder. Then finally during the second half, 18 minutes in Eder finally scored the winning goal, guaranteeing Portugal will be the winners of UEFA Euro 2016 for the first time in their countries history!
