The ex- Ivory Coast national and current Montreal
Impact player has been accused by the media of only giving 1% of the total
money that has been raised through his foundation - The Didier Drogba
Foundation, to the people of Africa. Thought he denies these allegations and when
asked about these claims by Sky Sports News he said – ‘are very disrespectful
and very bad for the foundation and these allegations are not right, the money
hasn't been spent, yes, but what's wrong with that? The most important thing is
that these are long-term projects. I'm not doing all this work just for one
year or for two years’.
He goes on to claim that he has already
spent £3.7million on the plans for these ongoing projects such as – ‘We have a
lot of projects, we have a mobile clinic and we have done a lot of work in
orphanages.’
He
goes on to mention that he already sent documentation proving that these things
are in working process, to UK’s – the Daily Mail, but they had ignored the
information and decided to publish these accusations so he will go forth and peruse with legal
action.
The foundation
is based and run in Ivory Coast and was set up in order to help with healthcare
and education for the people in Africa, created in 2007 and has raise
approximately £2million since. There has been many ways in which they have been
able to gain this money in London, things such as celebrity fundraising, with
the help of Drogba's former Chelsea team-mates Frank Lampard and John Terry, and
U2's Bono, and Princess Beatrice of York.
So far the foundation has been able to
build a medical clinic in the Ivory Coast economic capital - Abidjan, however
they have been waiting for the government’s approval in order to get it opened,
since August 2015.
